John Talman (1677-1726). Architect, amateur artist, draftsman, antiquarian. First director to the Society of Antiquaries. Said to be instrumental in bringing the Italian allegorical styles into British portraiture. Sketch is ink on paper, architectural drawing of altar decoration in St. Marks, Venice. Signed and dated 1719 lower right. Losses to the paper at bottom, as depicted. Some discoloration and creasing. Overall fine condition. Matted and framed, later half 20th c., modern frame.
